Edward Speed
CEO, Retired, Texas Dow Employees Credit Union
Bio
Ed Speed currently serves in ministry at the Catholic Worker House in San Antonio, where he assists homeless senior citizens by offering a friendly, pastoral presence and hands-on support. Alongside his wife of more than 56 years, Linda, he helps prepare and serve meals with other volunteers and when able, provides financial support to the ministry, reflecting their shared commitment to Catholic social teaching and to the call of Matthew 25: "When I was hungry, you gave me food…"
Speed previously served as President and CEO of one of Texas' largest retail banking institutions, retiring after three-plus decades in executive leadership of billion-dollar financial operations. During his 9-year tenure as CEO, the institution underwent transformative growth: loans grew from $400 million to $1.8 billion, assets increased from $700 million to $2 billion, customers expanded from 55,000 to more than 200,000, and retail branches multiplied from 2 to 20. This expansion was driven by disciplined strategy, values-based leadership, and a high-performance team culture.
Speed holds an M.A. in Systematic Theology (1986) from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, where he was named a Distinguished Graduate in Theology. He completed a post-Master's program in 1996 and pursued further graduate theological studies at the Oblate School of Theology from 2013 to 2015. He earned a B.B.A. in Finance (1970) from St. Mary's, with additional graduate studies in finance, accounting, and investments.
In 2014, Speed was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees at St. Mary's University. He and Linda established the Edward & Linda Speed Catholic Studies and Research Fund to support academic inquiry at the intersection of faith and reason.
Speed has been honored to receive the Bro. Paul Goelz, S.M. Award (2003) for professional accomplishment and commitment to Catholic social justice and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Mary's University (2019).
A U.S. Army veteran, he served as a Captain in the 1st Cavalry and 3rd Armored Divisions. He is also an instrument-rated private pilot and has flown numerous Angel Flights, transporting critically ill children from rural communities to major hospitals. Speed and Linda live in San Antonio, Texas, and are blessed with three adult children and four grandchildren.
